Background:
Cyclic environmental conditions, with swings of 50% to 80% in relative humidity, are common during the transportation and warehousing of products. The corrugated box industry has struggled to find solutions to maintaining the structural strength and durability of the corrugated box exposed to these cyclic changes in humidity conditions. Traditionally, Bulk Boxes, Produce Boxes, Poultry Boxes and Agricultural Boxes show significant declines in Edge Crush Values with exposure to high humidty environments.
These swings in relative humidity introduces creep, which is the repeated swelling and contraction of fibers due to changing humidity conditions, creating stresses - leading to fatigue or wilting of the box. This loss of strength results in box failures and costly damage claims from their customers.
Traditionally, corrective action is to attack the problem using heavier basis weights of liner and medium. The assumption being, "as weight increases, strength increases", to which you must also add, "cost increases", and the root problem is still not being addressed.
Solution:
MVTR Barrier Coatings and Barrier Adhesives - This combination provides a barrier to eliminate the transfer of moisture through the outside liners and or medium, resulting in increased stacking strength and protection for Bulk Boxes, Produce Boxes, Poultry Boxes and Agricultural Boxes. Customers can expect to offset the cost of the product by reducing the fiber weight of the liners.
Example: 2/26# KLB at 52# BW can replace 69# to 90# KLB, which offers a potential 33% to 70% savings in fiber cost and board weight.
